One of the few dedicated Sichuan Chinese restaurants in New Zealand, 2 Happy is full of novel dishes for adventurous eaters. If you're looking for guidance from the waiters, expect little due to their lacking English. The menu is devoid of English too, but luckily is filled with colourful pictures which you can point to. Another saving grace is the level of cleanliness that you'll find, it has a A rating that looks somewhat deserved! Best take some friends to 2 Happy, as the food is meant to be shared, with single dishes often more than enough for one person.
As expected of Sichuan food, almost every dish is heavily flavoured with chilli, pepper or a combination of both. Meat is hot, vegetables are hot, soup is hot, recognise a theme? The heat can be lessened, but the food works best when your tongue is tested, so I’d recommend a minimum of medium spiciness.
Favourite dishes include the silky mapo tofu, cold spiced noodles and the 'boiled fish'. The succulent flesh falls apart and the spicy soup and noodles are invigorating. The quality is consistent, so you can easily pick dishes at random and find something delicious.
