As a kid one ice cream brand stood head and shoulders above the rest: Ben & Jerry's. With creative flavours and bold chunks it was always my first pick. Fond memories of Cherry Garcia and Cookie Dough still lingering, I went to Ben & Jerry's launch in Ponsonby.
The open store, with prominent wood features, showcased dozens of flavours. There was a queue of people and only one employee: it was almost ten minutes before we were served. We chose the Coffee Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz and Sweet Cream & Cookies. They weren't worth the wait.
The flavours tasted exactly as they did as if they were scooped from a tub. What else would you expect right? But the flavours were dull and tepid. New Zealand has some incredible artisan ice cream parlours, where the ice cream tastes like it was blended minutes before you arrived. In comparison the Ben & Jerry's scoops tasted like they'd been made in a factory weeks ago.
