237 Parnell Road, Parnell, Auckland
Blue Elephant ranks as one of TripAdvisors best restaurants in Auckland, so I decided it would be worth a visit (back when I mistakingly thought TripAdvisor was a useful restaurant guide). Situated on trendy Parnell Road, and down a small alley, the restaurant had a cosy atmosphere and welcoming staff.
We ordered a few options to share, some sounding more authentic than others. Food arrived quickly, so we didn't have to wait long to ponder our choices.
The highs were the green curries. Though choked full of watery Western vegetables, the lemon grass flavoured curry was otherwise moreish. In fact the gravy was good enough to eat with rice alone.
The lows were the chicken cashew nut, which could have easily been served in a styrofoam box from a Chinese take away, and you'd never know the difference.
In the middle were the whole fried fish and crispy pork belly. Spice, sweet and light fish flesh came together into lavish spoonfuls. I've yet to eat pork belly I didn't like, is it even possible to cook it badly? Blue Elephant's version though not masterful, was delicious nonetheless.
