Perhaps of all the Chinese restaurants on Dominion Road, New Flavour is the most celebrated. Crowds of patrons wait for seats or takeaways. You could be forgiven for thinking there was something special here.
New Flavour serves Northern Chinese, which is a cuisine particularly prevalent on Dominion Road. Emphasis is heavy on dumplings, handmade noodles and cold dishes. On the menu there’s also a dollop of Sichuan, Cantosese and Western favourites (such as the sickly sweet and sour sauce pork).
On weekend nights service is excruciatingly slow. By the time each of our dishes had been served, we’d already finished the prior dish and been kept waiting. Increasing frustration came with the perplexingly poor dishes. The 'tofu' seemed to be mixed with flour, resulting in a horribly mushy texture. The plate of intestines was mostly raw onions. The dumplings in soup, only approached enjoyable after adding lots more seasoning. The noodles were bereft of substance, with dry meat and little else.
At the end of the meal, our bellies cried out to be fed something the least bit satisfying. Perhaps if this had been a unique experience I could be more forgiving, but prior visits to New Flavour had yielded similar.
