Spicy House review: Late night munches

$15 per person
557 Dominion Road, Mount Eden, Auckland

Dominion Road is famous for its down and dirty Asian eats, and Spicy House is one of the headliners. Open until early morning, with an inclusive Chinese menu, fast service and generous portions, it's one of the best late night munch spots in Auckland. Like many of Dominion's restaurants, Spicy House isn't much to look at. Instead it's all about the food.

The menu lists some ubiquitous Chinese dishes such as fried rice and dumplings, and Sichuan flavour dishes like gong bao chicken and mapo tofu. Spicy House's fried rice is legendary and mostly lives up to reputation. With just enough oiliness to encourage gluttony, plenty of tender shrimp and a pinch of chilli it's hard to find better comfort food. Other choices round out the menu.
The dumplings aren't the best, but satisfy with mildly crispy shells and succulent meat filling. Cold appetisers like seaweed salad and sliced potato add refreshing choices to the otherwise meat and stir fried heavy menu.

Spicy House might not shine at more conventional hours of the day, but at those twilight hours it's uncontested for comfort food. Spicy fried rice, chilli chicken and other dishes will make for a real midnight feast.
